RESIDENTS
WITHIN TEN MINUTE WALK OF THE HARBOUR
Hong Kong is one of the world’s most heavily populated cities, with some 6,300 people per square kilometre. However, the waterfront remains largely disconnected from the urban districts and 1.7 million residents living within a ten-minute walk.

HarbourLoop aims to address these issues along with other key liveability concerns for the city.

AIR QUALITY
HONG KONG IN TOP 20% OF AIR POLLUTED CITIES
The world’s leading air quality body IQAir ranked Hong Kong in the top 20% of the most air-polluted cities in 2019. While the Hong Kong Government figures show an improvement in roadside nitrogen dioxide levels in recent years, the annual average in 2019 was still twice the Air Quality Objectives (AQOs) limit. Pedestrian and zero-emission networks would help to reduce air pollution levels.
Mobility
HONG KONG LAGS IN CYCLING PATHS PER 1,000 SQKM
An astounding 90% of daily commuter trips are made on Hong Kong’s public transport. While the city is consistently ranked as one of the best-connected across its public transport offer, the experience can be challenging for those walking or wanting to cycle. In the ‘Future of Urban Mobility 3.0 report by Arthur D. Little, Hong Kong is ranked far below the global average, and its international competitors, for cycle-path network density measured per 1,000 square kilometres of land.

Liveability
HONG KONG EARNS LOWEST LIVEABILITY RANKING IN 10 YEARS
Density, mobility and air quality all contribute to a city’s ‘world liveability ranking’. Hong Kong plummeted in expat liveability rankings in 2020 to 93rd in Asia, as determined by the ECA International’s Global Liveability Index. The HarbourLoop proposal aims to address these concerns, creating a healthier Hong Kong.
SUSTAINABILITY
PROPOSING THE FIRST ZERO-EMISSION MOBILITY NETWORK IN HONG KONG
If realised, HarbourLoop would be Hong Kong’s first mobility network prioritising zero-emission modes of transit. Socially and environmentally responsive, the design promotes an alternative to vehicular travel, reducing pollution, emissions, and advocating for a healthier and more active lifestyle offer in Hong Kong.
